Hello Scotland! One Day in Edinburgh

Hey guys! I’m back again with my travel posts 🙂

Today I wanted to talk about the day I spent in Edinburgh. Technically, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, but we Americans somehow still think it’s a separate country 😀

Since we landed in Manchester, everyone told us we should take the short drive up to Scotland to explore one of its most famous cities. We rented a car and first went to spend half the day at Lake District. Then we decided to drive up to Edinburgh. It wasn’t a very long drive, and the views were breathtaking!

It looked exactly like the Scotland everyone shows in movies and TV shows. We arrived in Edinburgh by nighttime. It was so shocking to us that nightfall was at 10pm in Scotland when we were there!

We spent the night in a very cute Bed and Breakfast a couple minutes away from the city. The next day we woke up bright and early and went to our first spot, Edinburgh castle! It was quite a site, and I’m an avid follower of the European royal families, so seeing the rooms of Mary, Queen of Scots was so amazing!

The Queen was also in Edinburgh when we were there, which is why we weren’t able to see Holyrood Palace. But we did get treated to a special performance outside of Edinburgh castle because of her 🙂

After spending time at the castle, we decided to complete a sort of Harry Potter “trail” since we are such big fans of Harry Potter. First, we went to get some hot chocolate at the “birthplace of Harry Potter” a cafe where J.K Rowling came to write her books! I remember sitting in one of the tables and getting the most perfect view of Edinburgh castle which might’ve been her inspiration for Hogwarts!

Then we explored the very famous Victoria Street, J.K Rowling’s inspiration for Diagon Alley. It was so beautiful! Along the way, we explored the different cathedrals and just took in the sights.

We also tried to get to Arthur’s Seat, but a majority of Edinburgh was blocked off due to the Queen’s arrival which was kind of sad.

Overall, I loved Edinburgh and everyone’s Scottish accents 🙂 It was a really great experience!

  13. It’s a while since we’ve been to Edinburgh; the last time was to pick up a leather chair bought from a store in Haymarket and we got “transfixed and bemused” by the traffic restrictions and new routes through the town brought in because of the new trams! I think we’re too old to cope with driving into the city so we’re going to stick to public transport from now on.

(I’m thinking that driving into Glasgow will give me the same kind of headache!)

I’m sure the shops in Edinburgh and Glasgow are missing the footfall!
